“As Mankind becomes more liberal, they will be more apt to allow that all those who conduct themselves as worthy members of the community are equally entitled to the protections of civil government. I hope ever to see America among the foremost nations of justice and liberality.”—George Washington
“Phil — Just a quick note to encourage you to do the right thing and shoot yourself in the head. Don’t waste any more time, do it today. It is truly the greatest contribution to life that you will ever make.”—A note sent to climate scientist Phil Jones • Suggesting he kill himself for his work on climate change. Jones, a scientist at the center University of East Anglia, was one of the people at the center of “Climategate,” a controversy that climate change skeptics used to call into question the basic tenets of climate change. Journalist James Delingpole, one of the skeptics who spearheaded Climategate, called into question the idea that Jones got death threats, so an environmentalist checked with the university — and got back eight pages worth of death threats. Wowza. (via shortformblog)
It is hard to know how our future descendants will regard the little sliver of history that we live in. It is hard to know what events will seem important to them, what the narrative of now will look like to the twenty-fifth century mind. We tend to think of our time as one uniquely shaped by the advance of technology, but more and more I suspect that this will be remembered as an age of cosmology—-as the moment when the human mind first internalized the cosmos that gave rise to it.
Since this is in fact a philosophical question, I have no choice but to answer “no.”
“Many polling locations here in the inner city of Milwaukee are running out of ballots and voter registration forms. Based on the anecdotes I’m hearing from the field, it’s safe to say that hundreds and hundreds of people have not voted as a result.”—Gary Younge, a reporter with The Guardian • While out in Milwaukee, Younge discovered a lack of forms at some polling stations. This is also being confirmed by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Probably not the best of news to come out of Wisconsin right now. source (via • follow)
