- A note sent to climate scientist Phil Jones • Suggesting he kill himself for his work on climate change. Jones, a scientist at the center University of East Anglia, was one of the people at the center of “Climategate,” a controversy that climate change skeptics used to call into question the basic tenets of climate change. Journalist James Delingpole, one of the skeptics who spearheaded Climategate, called into question the idea that Jones got death threats, so an environmentalist checked with the university — and got back eight pages worth of death threats. A just-published bombshell article in the November issue of Bloomberg Markets magazine implicates Koch Industries, the company controlled by Republican mega-donors Charles and David Koch, in dozens of criminal acts around the globe over the past three decades.

According the report, company officials have been caught paying bribes to win contracts, trading with Iran in violation of the U.S. embargo, price-fixing, neglecting safety and ignoring environmental regulations.

The billionaire brothers are major donors to FreedomWorks, the Cato Institute, and dozens of other conservative think-tanks and nonprofits.

Do read the full article. It’s easy to dismiss this as wholly unsurprising, but it’s actually quite an outrage to see the catalog of sins amassed by the Koch brothers and their corporations.

Again, I’m going to suggest if corporations are people, these corporations should be held criminally responsible.

There are many options: religion, social ways, class & race issues, relation of big business to government, money-making opportunities, even style of dress can fit in there.

Moderates and liberals must internalize that the overriding conservative issue today, the one that trumps all others, is Social Mobility. All of the conservative issues above fit in some way or other under the fear of social mobility and the breakdown of class structure. Most liberals find this hard to understand—they tend to believe that a rising tide lifts all boats and that all Americans should have equal opportunity, and often don’t realize that not everyone believes this.”
