Why Weiner’s actions were worse than Vitter’s or Ensign’s
Years ago, even before I met my wife, I lived in New York City. Among my circle of friends were teachers, artists, artisans, architects, lawyers, social workers and, due to college friendships of my then-girlfriend, more than a few bankers.
I was always amazed at the belligerent entitlement these young bankers possessed, even among the one or two that I actually liked. These men did everything all the way, whether it was spending a weekend at the beach or throwing a party for friends. They compared notes on who could get the best hookers for their clients (always on expense account), and bragged about who could bag the hottest girls first.
They didn’t actually seem like real people to me, more like caricatures of macho as drawn by an eighth-grader, and I honestly don’t recall a single one of their names, even after partially sharing a summer house in the Hamptons with a few. With their cigars and cars, they were nothing like anyone else I knew in the city, and by far the least empathic, least introspective, and most politically conservative. Picture a Joe Scarborough type in his mid-20’s with a shit-ton of cash and you’ll envision the attitude that I recall.
They considered any liberal opinions to be female. And if a man wanted sex, they expected him to go out and get it.
Fortunately the summer ended along with the house share, but when I imagine who funds our politics and media today, these are the men I picture, and the hypocrisy on Weiner doesn’t surprise me in the least. For these guys, Ensign would have been taking what he deserved, and Vitter would’ve been diving into some kinky fun that he rightfully paid for. Besides, prostitution, affairs and payoffs have been around since the dawn of man.
But Weiner? Tweeting a picture? Well that’s just sad, weak, pointless and strange. “Real men” hire a prostitute or have an affair; they get right to the point. By holding back physically, Weiner is the one that looks perverse. So he’s the one that needs to go.
You think it’s morally worse to actually break the law and to personally and physically degrade people?
Well, you must be some sort of liberal, right?
